Where should one go to seek advice and guidance about stammering? It can often be difficult to really know where to go for help as it such a complex problem to have, which is rarely understood.

People who have this form of speech impediment will normally start by going to see a speech and language therapist before eventually searching for alternative forms of specialist therapy. This is once they have realised that speech therapy will not provide them with the solutions that they are looking for.

ex-stammerersStammering is rather a complex subject, as already stated, and in my opinion only a person who has had this form of speech impediment can really understand what it is like to have a stammer. I would imagine that those people who are reading this article and who have a stammer will fully understand what I mean when I write this.

I also had a stammer and I had to endure and listen to what I call voices/demons in my head. These voices wanted me to think in a negative way, they wanted me to stress and they would attempt to convince me that I was going to stammer during a certain time or event. To say that I hated these demons would be an understatement; they were effectively ruining my life.

There was only one thing for it, I had to wage war on these nasty demons and it would be a war that I could not afford to lose. If I could some how eradicate them from my brain then I could possibly learn how to stop stammering.

At the same time as attempting to defeat these demons I also wanted to establish where I was going wrong in the physical sense. I decided to study how people that I saw as very good talkers spoke in comparison to myself, in an attempt to improve.

It was very slow progress however progress there was. I took nearly a year but I was victorious; I had achieved my lifetime goal of fluency.
